8 Tips for Advancing Any Career

8 Tips for Advancing Any Career Everyone wants to live up to his or her potential in life. For some people, this means that they want to have a big family or contribute to charities. For others, it means advancing as far as possible in their career. Career advancement can be a stressful and difficult process. It is hard to understand when to ask for a raise or try for a promotion. However, there are several things you can do to set yourself up for advancement in the career of your choosing. Be Patient Asking for a promotion or raise too soon is one of the biggest downfalls for people looking for career advancement. You never want to seem pushy, especially if you really do not deserve to be advanced. Instead, be patient and work hard to demonstrate your abilities. People will notice you putting in extra effort in the workplace without having to actually announce what you are doing. You will be surprised how much respect you will earn from your bosses and coworkers simply for doing your job. Be Humble Once people start noticing your hard work, you do not want to gloat and brag about your accomplishments. Be humble and keep doing your job. People who are higher up in your company will be impressed with your attitude. They are more likely to advance someone who is quietly proud of what they do over a person who is constantly talking about how hard they work. Praise Others People respond well to positive energy in the workplace. Compliment others any chance that you get. Emphasize the things that your coworkers do well. Let them know that they are really bringing a lot to the company. They will be more likely to help you in the future if you have consistently been nice to them. For example, you will be able to use them as references as you are advancing in your career. Join Associations and Organizations You should always be on the lookout for associations and professional organizations that are related to your field of work. These will be very helpful in teaching you the ins and outs of your industry. You will find out several tricks and tips that the average worker does not know. In addition, associations and organizations provide great opportunities for networking. Go Back to School A lot of companies require an advanced degree in order to move up in the organization. This means you will have to go back to school if you only have a bachelors degree. Thankfully, a lot of companies will pay for your continued education. There are also several affordable  online MBA  programs that make getting a degree convenient.  Another cool online masters program which may set you apart from all the MBA grads out there- is Creightons  dispute resolution degree. In todays world full of conflict, many government organizations, schools, businesses and health care systems are frequently turning to mediators instead of attorneys to get things resolved. Dont Hold Grudges Things do not always work out the way that you want them to. You need to learn how to let things go and move on. For example, if your coworker got the promotion that you wanted or was assigned the project that you were after, dont get stuck on it. Keep working hard and you will eventually be noticed. Your negativity will only bring you down. Do More Than What is Asked of You One of the best ways to advance in your career is to do more work than what is assigned to you. Take on a new project if you find yourself with some downtime. Your bosses will take notice of how hard you are pushing yourself and keep that in mind when new positions open up. Show Respect One of the biggest keys to advancing in your career is something that you have been taught since you were a child. Show respect to everyone around you. You will be surprised how such a simple thing gets lost in the workplace. People get too caught up in their own job and forget about being respectful to those around them. Pay special attention to how you are treating others and you will stand out.

Increase Inner Strength to Achieve Outward Appeal - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Increase Inner Strength to Achieve Outward Appeal - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The problem most entrepreneurs have is they focus on their weaknesses instead of their strength. Through the years mental files have been collected focusing on shortcomings. It is this very file that holds one back. The challenge is hereby on for you to turn Negative Comments into Gold! Create a one-of-a-kind folder that documents all of the heart-wrenching, fool-hearty and head-scratching negative comments told to you.  In fact, put a smiley face on top of the folder and here is why: The reason these comments make our skin crawl or that anger creeps into our mind, is because there is a teensy element of truth behind each. Your challenge, should you be up for it, is to begin with the comments that upset you most.  Face the devilish remark from all angles.  What can you do to turn the situation around to prove to yourself and the world that it can be done?! Be forewarned: this exercise may become motivating!  As you fix one situation and the next, you may wish to go through the entire list.  And now you have a brand new mindset of welcoming negative comments.  The best part is, the very people who tried to put you down seem to fade away never to bother you again. So its a win-win the definition of a good sale. In this case, you sold yourself.  You put doubt to rest and will have achieved more! The next step is to recognize you can do the same for the hurdles that stopped you in your tracks.  Go through the same exercise as if someone told you, You cant because A major hurdle for most is the process of negotiating proposals. Whether you are the buyer or the seller, it is very good to practice negotiating offers from the other side of where you normally sit at the table.  For example, if you are customarily the presenter, the next opportunity you have, do your best to negotiate from the buyers point of view. Likewise, if you normally purchase, then the next time you are the presenter, do your best to sell value. By practicing negotiating from the opposite viewpoint of whats normal for you, better insight will be gained as to what is most important to the people who normally sit on the other side of the table. View the first round as a starting point.  As a seller, suggest you are seeking a meeting of minds to find the best solution available. Continued conversation without emotion will encourage the other party to similarly seek a solution where all parties benefit. At the core of the practice is to find understanding, compassion, and finally, heart. By the time you put heart into your conversation, you will turn heads and minds that keenly listen to you. Putting these practices into everyday activity increases confidence and communication skills. Trust in you builds. This is key for business development and increasing sales.  In the process, you will develop a well-recognized and admired personal brand. Finding benefit for all concerned will lead you to the  Smooth Sale!

Punctuality Is The Politeness of Kings- How To Be On Time, Every Time

Punctuality Is The Politeness of Kings- How To Be On Time, Every Time When you’re late, it shows that you value your time above anyone else’s. To be successful, punctuality is one thing you absolutely have to get right. It shows you are efficient, can plan your time well and overall makes a good impression all round. Lateness can lose you serious respect, mean you lose clients, miss opportunities and so much more. All for something that can generally be avoided. Here are a few of the ways you can  ensure you’re always on time to boost your career’s success. Get Ready The Night Before Having your clothes, bag, lunch and everything else sorted the night before means everything will run much more smoothly in the morning. Any important paperwork should be done and ready to go. If you’re going somewhere new, the directions should all be sorted. You could even plan what you are having for breakfast so that when you get up, you know exactly what you need to do. When your morning goes well, it sets you up for a good day. So avoid all stress and put in the effort the night before to make sure nothing is overlooked. Have a Backup Plan You’re on time, everything is running smoothly, and you’re ready to set off for your day. You turn the ignition in your car- and realize something is wrong. Car troubles and unfortunate and can happen to anyone, so having a backup plan just in case is essential. You could sign up for an Uber account which would allow you to quickly book a ride to work if you need it. This is useful as everything is paid through your card, so there’s no need to mess around at cashpoints or locating cash like you have to with regular taxis. You can find out more information, as well as get discounts on sites such as https://rydely.com. If you usually catch the bus to work, it could also be useful in the event of missing buses. Don’t be late as a result of transport problems! Leave Early Always allow yourself extra time. That way you have room to maneuver if you do experience any issues. Bear in mind factors such as busy traffic, weather conditions, or if you’re going somewhere new the chance that you may get lost. In the cases of things like meetings, presentations, and interviews, arriving thirty minutes early gives you a chance to sit down and collect your thoughts rather than having to dive straight in. Schedule Your Day Having a schedule, and sticking to it allows you to plan your time better. It stops you from procrastinating and filling your time with things that aren’t important. If you know what you’re meant to be doing during the day and which time it helps you work much more efficiently. You could use a regular paper diary or notebook for this, or use an app such as this one on https://itunes.apple.com. Image credits Main    Punctuality

Book review Getting to yes - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Book review Getting to yes - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog This is the classic book about negotiating, from way back in 1980. I like the book, because it stresses a positive mode of negotation. A mode that is based on honesty, integrity, fairness and mutual understanding. The basic view is, that in a negotiation, the two extreme positions are hard and soft. Hard negotiators are adversaries, soft negotiators want to be friends. And between these two poles stands the principled negotiator, who ses himself and the other side as problem solvers. A very constructive view. The book is full of concrete advise for many situations where youre trying to reach agreement. The techniques can be used on the job, at home, anywhere. The only drawback of the book, is that much of it seems familiar. The book is so popular, that many courses are based on it, so you may have seen some of the material before. Still, its cheap, so get it and see if you still have something to learn about negotating. Interestingly enough, the negotiating style that the authors recommend, seems very similar to the conecpt of open dialogue that pops up everywhere these days. In dialogue, you do not defend different view points, you explore different views together. You do not necessarily judge every statement, and you certainly dont judge the person making the statement. Do You Hate Meeting New People

Do You Hate Meeting New People Does the thought of meeting new people repulse you?   Do you avoid it like the plague?   At least you have the choice to opt out. Think about the millions of kindergarteners who began school this year.   They entered a foreign world, knowing virtually no-one, forced into a new routine, where every second they are being  asked to do something new and different. And you think you have it tough? Imagine the first day of school through the eyes of a kindergartener.   They are in a new surrounding with up to 20 people they have never met before.   What do they talk about?   Who will they sit next to?   Who do they partner up with during activities?   Who do they sit next to at lunch?   Who do they play with on the playground?   When you dont know anyone, how do you make those choices?   Simple, you just do it! Oh, to be a kid again.   They are so resilient.   They havent the years of experience to taint their memories.   It is all fresh.   So, what lessons can we learn from them, so we too, can just do it? Get on the bus and go.   Your Mom says so. Instead of making excuses for why you dont want to go to a group meeting, association gathering or networking event, just sign yourself up and GO. Sit next to somebody you know. Chances are, you will at least know one person in a group. Sit next to them.   It will feel better than sitting alone. Ask if they want to play. Pick someone, anyone, and ask them a question.   You dont have to become their best friend. They dont know anyone either, says your Mom. Dont make assumptions. Most of the people there dont know each other either.   You are all in the same boat.   Dont feel bad or alone. Be Nice! Not that anyone would be mean on purpose.    Befriend someone who looks more scared than you.  Remember the old saying, it is nice to share.   Dont complain about ANYTHING. Cookies are waiting for you at home. It may not be cookies, but set up some reward for yourself when you return to the comfort of  home.   It is the carrot at the end of the stick. You may be asking yourself why you need to meet new people in the first place.   In case you havent heard, networking is the number one way people are finding jobs right now.   If you dont have people to network with, it is going to take a very, very, very long time to find a job.
