10 Things Never to Say In The First 30 Days of Work

10 Things Never to Say In The First 30 Days of Work10 Things Never to Say In The First 30 Days of Work When you first start a job, not only is it important to make a positive first impression, its also important to prove a point. No, youre not trying stroll into the new job and act like the head honcho, but instead, you are trying to prove your worth and potential. All eyes are on you, the new hire, and its your time to shine. To dazzle your anfhrer, align with colleagues and be primed for success, there are not only some quick wins to achieve in the first 30 days, but there are some definite no-nos . Listen, learn and lean in are the must-dos. Alienating, assuming, and acting aloof are behaviors that will tarnish your reputation before youve even had a chance to make it to your first wertzuwachs review.Put your positive foot forward and take note of these 10 things to never say in the first 30 days of work.Dont be afraid to ask questions- thats what your new hire time is for. Steer clear of this statement, and replace it with comments like What are your thoughts about. and How does your team approach or What do you think about when trying to tackle..2. Isnt that Chris job? Should we loop him in?While it maybe correct to include an important stakeholder in a meeting, saying Isnt that Chris job? is a bit off-putting. It can make you sound uncooperative and may be a red flag to colleagues that perhaps youre not a team player. Remember, teamwork makes the dream work. Pitch in where you can and be a hand-raiser in the first 30 days especially.Do , dont try . Just do In the first 30 days, you should aim to achieve, if not exceed, expectations. Your goal should be to add value to the team and to contribute as much as you can. Instead of making excuses, try making strides. Trust us, your boss will appreciate your tenacity.4. Why do parents on the team get to work from home some days? Thats not fair.Showing distaste for the companys flexible work policies or how coworkers schedule their work will not win you any friends at the office. Sure, there has been recent discussions about the perception of unfair workloads between single, childless workers and married colleagues or those with families, however, this is not a debate that new employees need to engage in- at least not publicly. If you want a flexible work schedule, discuss that with your boss, and leave the parents on the team out of it.5. At my previous job, we used to do it like thisAs tempting as this one might be, watch out for how many times this slips out. Once or twice is fine, but you dont want your new colleagues to think that youre unable to leave the processes of your past roles in the, well, in the past. Embrace new tools, tactics, and procedures. Once youve learned the protocol, feel free to suggest tweaks or efficiencies.6. I should have asked for more money. While you may have regrets about your salary negotiation or compensation, focus on the future. Set aside the shoulda, coulda, wouldas and focus on the work at hand. Once performance review time comes, you can use Know Your Worth to make your case for a raise. Its easy to get confused when youre new to the job. However, instead of sound negative, simply ask probative questions to understand what your colleague is saying. Try I want to understand more, can you give me the background? If youve made a misstep, own it. No need for excuses. Your boss and colleagues understand that onboarding can be bumpy. Simply apologize and move on. Next time, youll do better. While you may be the senior team member, theres no need to throw your weight around in such an obvious, heavy-handed way. Lead by example. No matter what, keep your cool. Even if youre contemplating jumping ship, do it gracefully .

Heres the biggest thing holding you back

Heres the biggest thing holding you backHeres the biggest thing holding you backAs I was doing research for the book Im currently writing, I came across this quote from an anonymous NASA employeeI am here today to cross the swamp, not to fight all the alligators. The quote resonated with me because we often do the opposite. We fight the alligators, instead of crossing the swamp. The swamp is a scary, uncertain place. We may never reach the other side. In many cases, we dont even know why were in the swamp in the first place and whats awaiting on the other side. Were afraid of who we might become if we cross it.But we know how to fight those alligators, so we fight them. We spend ur time doing what we know best- tackling our emails, attending endless meetings- instead of finishing that paper or launching that product. Its not like fighting alligators is completely unjustified. Theyre there after all. Theymightpresent a danger to us. As the alligators scream their 100 decibel sirens for a ttention, we feel compelled to fight them. Rather than being proactive, we spend most of our days- and our lives- playing defense. All this churnfeelsproductive, but its not. Were slaying the alligators, but the shore isnt any closer. Were winning each battle, but were losing the war. Each of us is a modern Don Quixote tilting at windmills.Whats worse, a new alligator appears as quickly as another disappears. Each email we send generates even more emails. Each Facebook message, tweet, and Instagram post gives us a reason to return. We have a choice. We can keep fighting alligators and waiting for a magical springboard to show up and catapult us to the other side (Spoiler There are no magical springboards).Or we can ignore the alligators, focus on the important instead of the urgent, and cross that swamp, inch by grueling inch.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. Top 4 Ancient Design Prototypes

Top 4 Ancient plan Prototypes Top 4 Ancient Design Prototypes Top 4 Ancient Design PrototypesThese days, with the assistance of advanced CAD software and revolutionary 3D printing technologies, moving from crude prototype to final design can take hours instead of the weeks, months, and even years that it did in the past.Design flaws can be corrected with the click of a mouse, while multiple prototypes can be printed and tested with the push of a button, providing nearly flawless simulations for the production of everything from fighter jets to hundred-story skyscrapers. However, as the saying goes, Things were not always thus. The wonders of ancient Greece and Egypt required engineering far in advance of their time, and marvels of engineering such as the Pyramids and the Parthenon didnt sprout up out of the ground whole. The following is a list of the Top 4 examples of ancient prototyping something to keep in mind the next time you get frustrated after a few rounds on the 3D printer.T he Parthenon temple on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.4) The ParthenonThe Parthenon was constructed during what was truly the infancy of the art and discipline of architecture, as well as the field of construction and building. Completed in 447 BC, historians believe that this monument to the goddess Athena was like most structures in this era based on wooden prototypes, either specifically constructed in miniature for this purpose, or based on existing structures, which would have been referred to throughout construction.Perhaps not quite as technologically thrilling as a Greek Antikythera device (which was created hundreds of years later), but effective nonetheless. It would be hard to imagine a kollektiv of engineers today cobbling together a wooden model of the Burj Khalifa, for instance. The Colosseum in Rome, Italy.3) The ColosseumThere is a qualifier that appears in textbooks to describe many examples of saga sculpture and architecture Roman copy after a Greek original. As with the Greeks and Egyptians, ancient Roman engineers turned to pre-existing structures to use as prototypes when designing much of their architecture. However, unlike their predecessors, who were forced to iterate and design within their own sphere of knowledge, the Romans had the grandeur of both of these previous empires to study and learn from. With the ruins of ancient Egypt, and in particular, ancient Greece, both just next door in the Mediterranean, ancient Rome had world class prototypes to model their great structures on, and nowhere is this seen more clearly than in their theaters and arenas, which culminated in the building of The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheater. With countless existing examples of Greek theaters to serve as their life-sized prototypes, Roman builders and engineers took the best features of the Greek style and combined them with their own brand of grandeur. The tiered seating of the Greek theater is employed in the construction of Roman a mphitheaters, but, not content to build their structures into the sides of hills and make them part of the landscape as the Greeks did, the Romans built their structures to stand alone, as a statement of power and greatness. They certainly succeeded with the Colosseum. The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.2) The Great PyramidThere is almost no doubt among scholars that the construction of the Pyramids, and in particular, the Great Pyramid, required a basic design process that would be recognized today. Iterating through drawings and schematics would be the only way such construction was possible in 2528 BC, when the Great Pyramid was completed. However, by the era of the Great Pyramid, the Egyptians had one great advantage when it came to constructing bigger, better, and more awe-inspiring structures their own earlier, inferior structures to look back upon. The existing structures at Saqqarah (the Step Pyramid) and Dahshur (an example of a Rhomboidal Pyramid) would have provided massive living prototypes for Egyptian engineers to use as they sought to improve upon the design to create the massive Great Pyramid. In effect, the Great Pyramid was created through a nearly seamless iterative process that took centuries to complete. (Another story to keep in mind when growing impatient with the 3D printer.)Building the robot of Leonardo da Vinci in the Leonardo3lab. Image Mario Taddei / Leonardo3lab / Wikimedia Commons1) da Vincis KnightLeonardo da Vinci is considered to be the grandfather of engineering, and his schematics and designs for marvels that were centuries ahead of their time are well known to anyone who has taken a world history class or even simply spent an afternoon watching documentaries on the History Channel or Discovery Channel. However, in 1495, he is said to have gone beyond mere sketches and drawings to do something that was rare for him and truly light years ahead of the world he lived in. He built an actual working prototype of a robot.Working fo r the Duke of Milan, who was searching for an indestructible, mechanized soldier for use in battle, da Vinci came up with the idea for his robotic knight, operated by an intricate system of pulleys, cables, gears, and cranks. He is said to have presented the robot at a large celebration the Duke hosted. However, no trace of the prototype has ever been found, and no scholars have been able to verify for certain that the prototype existed. In 2002, NASA roboticist Mark Rosheim created a working model based on da Vincis notes. In 2007, engineer and author Mario Taddei created a similar model.Learn more about the latest technologies in 3D printing at ASMEsAM3D. Earn or learn

Earn or learn Earn or learnPosted October 13, 2011, by Helen Isbister With youth unemployment rising, federal and state governments have joined forces to guarantee a place in study or training for every unemployed person under 25. The latest official figures show there are nearly 80 000 people aged 16 to 20 who are neither studying nor employed and are receiving the Youth Allowance. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd vows to get that number down to zero moving Australias youth from the dole queue into classrooms or jobs. We cannot allow the skills and training needed by a modern economy to skip a generation because of a global recession, Mr Rudd said while announcing the scheme at a Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting. We dont want to repeat the mistakes of the past whereby young people who lose their job become the long-term unemployed of tomorrow, Mr Rudd said. Under the Compact with Young Australians scheme, people between the ages of 17 and 20 will be provided with training places, along with people between 20 and 25 who have lost jobs and need to retrain. The Government anticipates that the Compact will provide up to 135 000 young people with higher qualifications. Arguing that high school retention rates deliver stronger economic productivity, COAG agreed to aim to lift the retention rate from the current 74 per cent to 90 per cent by 2015. Mr Rudd has offered state governments a share of a $100 million funding pool if they achieve that goal. So thats the carrot. Whats the stick? Well the government is tightening up Youth Allowance criteria, which will mean if young people dont play the game, they wont be getting any cheques from the government. Those without a Year 12 or equivalent qualification will no longer receive a Youth Allowance of up to $200 a week, unless they are in an approved training or education program. The same will apply to parents receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A. The plan has received widespread support, but there are sti ll doubts about how it will work in reality. There are concerns the plan could be a burden on young people already doing it tough, if the government isnt able to step up to the plate and fund the proposal. The Australian Education Union says an additional $1.4 billion would be needed by public schools every year to make the plan a success. 5 Things You Should Say in Every Job Interview

5 Things You Should Say in Every Job Interview5 Things You Should Say in Every Job Interview5 Things You Should Say in Every Job InterviewInterviews are complicated, but sometimes the simplest bewerbungsinterview advice makes the most sense... the kind youll find in this post by GL Hoffman, authorof the blog What Would Dad Say. Rather than tell us more about what not to say in a job interview, GL provides a list of five simple things you should always say in an interview. No matter who you are or what the job is, these five statements will impress your interviewer and set you apart. 1. Please and Thank YouWere all adults, so youd think this would go without saying. Thats the problemfor many job candidates it does go without saying. Respect and gratitude... verbalize them early and often.2. Ive been thinking about your company, and I believe I can contribute by...This kind of statement shows you took the time to research their business. As GL points out, it doesnt matter if your analy sis is wrong. The fact that you thought about the company before your interview earns you points.3. Im impressed by the way you... Everyones a sucker for a genuine compliment. If theres something you particularly likedthe building, the people, the corporate mission, the interviewers punctuality, the music you heard on holdsay so.4. May I start right away? They wont say yes on the spot. The purpose of this kind of bold statement is to tell them youre very interested in the job. That puts you ahead of the candidates who leave with a vague statement like Ive got a lot to think about or Thanks, have a nice day5. So, the next steps are...?If the interviewer instructs you to do something (e.g., send work samples or references, or call Jane Smith on Monday at 900 am), make sure youve got the details right, then go home and follow those instructions to the letter. Yes, its a test dont flunkThere you have it. Its hard to argue with courtesy, friendliness, respect, and affirmation.

3D Printing Scaffolds for Bone

3D Printing Scaffolds for Bone 3D Printing Scaffolds for Bone 3D Printing Scaffolds for BoneNatural werkstoffs like wood and bone, although porous, support great weights and can perform as the scaffolding for tree limbs, buildings, or bodies for a long time without breaking down. Those materials have whats termed a high strength-to-weight ratio because their inherent internal structure and their porous nature give them a high surface-to-volume ratio. But that very architecture makes it hard to mimic these materials through engineered means. Manmade materials with these ultrastrong properties could be used in a range of emerging applications, such as high-performing lithium ion batteries and biological scaffolds. Now engineers at Washington State University in Pullman, WA, have created a 3D printing method to print structures that can precisely imitate the internal architecture of nature-made materials. Most natural materials like wood and bone are lightweight, yet very strong because the y have precise control of their structural architectural, says Rahul Panat, associate professor of mechanical and materials engineering at the university, who led the research. Arranging nanoparticles in 3D space allows us to mimic these materials.Engineers use the technique to print 3D lattices with hierarchical structures, meaning that the structural elementsthe rods that connect the latticecan themselves be made of lattices of even smaller rods. This same hierarchy of structure gives bones their compressive strength. The printing method was inspired by the desert rose, a natural, rose-like formation of sulfate and sand. Image Stock photoThe first step in the printing process is to create the printing material. For this, researchers crushed a build material into nanoparticles. They used silver to demonstrate the technique, but other materials such as ceramics or different types of metals, anything that can be crushed into nanoparticles, will work, Panat says. They then mixed the p articles with a solvent to create their ink, which they then aerosolized. This creates a mist of fog-like microdroplets that contain nanoparticles of silver. An aerosol jet printer next deposits those droplets in precise locations, allowing the researchers to control the size of the pores in the material down to the nanometer, Panat says. The material is next heated to around 200 degrees Celsius to fuse the nanoparticles and evaporate the solvent. As the liquid in the fog evaporates, the nanoparticles remain, creating delicate metal structures with features as small as 20 microns, the size of a human hair.Controlling the heating conditions allows the researchers to control the size of pores in the material down to the nanometer, Panat says. The tiny structures that result look similar to Tinker Toy constructions. The researchers have already created several intricate and beautiful structures, including microscaffolds that contain solid trusses but are created without supporting materia ls. Theyve also printed stretchable interconnects, spirals, and pillar bridges, electronic connections that resemble accordion bellows, and doughnut-shaped pillars.By arranging nanoparticles in 3D space, we can maintain the nanoscale benefits of particles while building the total volume. Nature does it in a more random way but the principle is quite similar.Prof. Rahul Panat,Washington State UniversityBy arranging nanoparticles in 3D space, we can maintain the nanoscale benefits of particles while building the total volume, Panat says. Nature does it in a more random way but the principle is quite similar.Indeed the principle is similar because, in creating the printing method, Panat was inspired by the desert rose, a rose-like formation of gypsum or barite, and sand. I knew of structures in west African deserts that are made from sulfates dissolved in fog droplets, he says. The fog condenses and evaporates and leaves the 3D structure that is a desert rose. The team has been at work on the method for two years and now looks forward to exploring several applications to put it to use. For instance, they are developing finely detailed, porous anodes and cathodes for batteries that could replace the solid structures now used. This could significantly increase battery speed and capacity, Panat says. The 3D printing method could be used to quickly fabricate materials at large scales and could also be used for tissue engineering, microfluidics, and micro-optoelectronics, he says. Biological implants and artificial bones printed using the technique would be lighter and stronger than materials used today. The researchers are now working to scale the technique so it can be used for large-scale manufacturing. The technology currently uses four print heads that work in tandem to print the materials in three dimensions. But more print heads, potentially hundreds, as is the case of 2D printing applications, will certainly speed the printing process, Panat says. This will fill q uite a few gaps in existing applications and create entirely new applications, he says of the printing method.Jean Thilmany is an independent writer.

How to Set Career Goals and Land Your Dream Job

How to Set Career Goals and Land Your Dream JobHow to Set Career Goals and Land Your Dream JobIt is important to set career goals for yourself, even from the time that you graduate from college. These goals will act as stepping stones that will help you build a successful career that you enjoy. The goals can also help to prevent you from making serious career mistakes. Its important to keep in mind that your first job may not be your dream job, but its a step toward reaching your long-term career goals. Determine Your Ideal Job First, you need to decide what your dream sttte is. This is your long-term goal. You may want to work up to a manager or director position or to become a vice president. You may want to write a book or go into business for yourself. Regardless of the position, its important to have a clear goal in mind. This will make planning out the process and the steps you need to take to get there much easier. How Will You Get There? Once youve decided on your ide al career, you need to determine what steps you need to take to get there. For example, if you want to move up into a position as manager, you may need to get an MBA. If you want to open your own business, you will need to gain experience in that field, then you will need to find capital to open the business. Seeing these specific steps can help you map out a career plan. It may also be helpful to set monthly, bimonthly, and annual goals for obtaining your dream job. For example, a monthly goal could be to read a book about your chosen field, while a bi-monthly goal might be to sign up for a business class. An annual goal might be to obtain an internship in your chosen field. Dont Let Missteps Discourage You After you graduate, you may find that you do not enjoy working in the career field you chose. Sometimes your major may not have been the right fit for you career-wise. It may not be as enjoyable as you want or leave you time for the things that are the fruchtwein important. If this is the case, you may want to completely change fields. Thats OK. One of the easiest ways to do this is to go back and get a degree in a different field but it is not the most cost-effective way. You may be able to just take classes to get extra certifications or the specific things you need in order to qualify for another job. You may also apply for an internship in the field before you transfer over to it, to make sure that you are choosing the right field for you, and not making the same mistake twice.
